A favorite author of mine, Charles Martin’s latest book is The Last Exchange. Maybe Joe Sue has been transferred through several dozen foster homes until she finally ages out. She’s working as a waitress in a diner when she’s asked by a film producer to “fill in” for the actor. This launches her film career, and eventually her need for an around-the-clock body guard. Thomas Pockets takes a leave of absence from his current job to help her out. Part of what he promises is to protect her from herself as personal events eventually take their toll and she ends up using drugs to stay awake and other drugs to go to sleep. He can see the latest crash and burn and does the unthinkable that he promised.
