Several years ago, Kathy Hofer, an art therapist and I taught an “Awakening to a Wholehearted Life” workshop. The workshop focus is wholeheartedness, so when I’m told of a book that is a “your guide to a wholehearted life,” it’s worth checking out. When we’re wholehearted, we’re full-hearted, rather than half-hearted; we keep our heart open and soft rather than closed and hard-hearted; we’re strong hearted, not weak-hearted, and clear in our hearts, not foggy. Brene’s book is an excellent resource when we’re wanting to study these aspects of the heart. Wonderful and insightful new definitions for many, many words.
“Perfectionism is the belief that if we live perfect, look perfect, and act perfect we can minimize or avoid the pain of blame, judgment, and shame. Perfectionism is often the path to life-paralysis. Life-paralysis refers to all of the opportunities we miss because we’re too afraid to put anything out in the world that could be imperfect. It’s also all of the dreams that we don’t follow because of our deep fear of failing, making mistakes, and disappointing others.”
“Wholeheartedness is about engaging in our lives from a place of worthiness. Wholehearted living is not a onetime choice. It is a process; a journey of a lifetime. Until we can receive with an open heart, we are never really giving with an open heart, letting go of judgment toward others and ourselves.”
