Another of my all-time favorite, especially for those who want some inspiration in going after their dreams, and how to grow through the obstacles that are really opportunities in disguise. I read this every few years. I’m learning Spanish, so most recently I read it in Spanish; some words are different and clearer than in English.
In this delightful story, it isn’t always easy and Santiago has to become inventive and persevere. Paulo Coelho’s masterpiece tells the mystical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure. His quest will lead him to riches far different, and far more satisfying He encourages us to listen to our hearts, to recognize opportunity, and learn to read the omens strewn along life’s path, and, most importantly, to follow our dreams.
“It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting. What’s the world’s greatest lie? It’s this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our lives becomes controlled by fate. That’s the world’s greatest lie.
“Your personal legend is what you have always wanted to accomplish. The Soul of the World is nourished by people’s happiness. And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it.”
“No, the alchemist answered. “What you still need to know is that before a dream is realized, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way. It does this so that we can, in addition to realizing our dreams, master the lessons we’ve learned as we’ve moved toward that dream. That’s the point at which most people give up. Every search begins with beginner’s luck. And every search ends with the victor’s being severely tested.”
