Author : John Briggs and F. David Peat
Genre : Favorites, Nonfiction
I read this book by Briggs and Peat for the first time in 2000. Since then, no matter how many other books I’ve read, whenever anyone asks for my top ten list, it includes this as one of my all-time favorites.
I’m intrigued by chaos theory and find this book the easiest to understand of the many books I’ve read on the subject. The authors include some terrific examples that clarify and expand our understanding of such terms as degrees of freedom, negative and positive feedback loops, turbulence, bifurcation, creativity, fractals, open and closed systems, to name just a few.
I’ve embraced the chaos that is part of my life and fosters both creativity and patience with the creative process. I’ve experienced tremendous satisfaction in creating the life of my dreams.
“Although we humans tend to abhor chaos and avoid it whenever possible, nature uses chaos in remarkable ways to create new entities, shape events, and hold the Universe together. The scientific term ‘chaos’ refers to an underlying interconnectedness that exists in apparently random events. . . . Each of us as individuals is inter-connected to the systems of nature, society, and thought that surround and flow through us.”
“Chaos is nature’s creativity. Creativity is available to everyone. The key to creative activity lies in the self-organization of available materials. For humans this means we must literally create with our lives.”
