This is the first book in a young adult series that I liked much better than Harry Potter books. Also, even though the characters continue on in the following books, each story is self-contained.

Fifteen-year-old Will dreams of becoming a knight even though he is small for his age. Much to his dismay, he’s chosen as a Ranger’s apprentice. He and Horace, who does become a knight and Alyss, who enters diplomatic service, will all be involved in the upcoming battle that is brewing. These teenagers’ wits and problem-solving skills are put to the test. Each book in the series tests Will’s ingenuity, and pits the three, plus other friends against unexpected challenges.
