If I’m including a book review about helping boys, I also want to include one of my favorite about helping girls. Step-by-compassionate-step, How to Father a Successful Daughter gives fathers (and mothers also) high-quality parenting skills that will promote self-respect and confidence in their daughters. This includes helpful suggestions on how to:
• Avoid unintentionally programming her to become fearful and underachieving
• Encourage risk-taking, goal-oriented behavior with safe and specific techniques and activities
• Keep from sending your daughter messages that can result in eating disorders, learning blocks, and emotional dependence.
“When interacting with daughters, fathers displayed a curious behavior which they did not display with sons. They would pick up the puzzle piece and put it in place for the daughter —before she requested help. This type of behavior has devastating effects. Ultimately, it produces a type of behavior called “learned helplessness.
“Helplessness is the belief that nothing you choose to do will affect what happens to you. It’s the giving-up reaction, the quitting response that follows from the belief that whatever you do doesn’t matter. Learned helplessness is reinforced when we prematurely rescue your daughter. This sends a powerful message. You can’t do this alone; you are not capable. you need help.”
“Real security lies not in money. It lies in trusting yourself to survive any situation. The only way for your daughter to find that kind of unshakable faith in herself is to begin taking risks now in order to prepare her to handle whatever life places before her. Anything less limits your daughter’s capacity to control her personal destiny.”
