Elantris is one of the few fantasy stories told in one volume. Check out the glossary of common Aons at the back of the book first, because they are a little-understood part of the story. A better explanation of Aons somewhere in the book would have been helpful.

Brandon Sanderson’s book is the story of Crown Prince Raoden of Kae, Princess Sarene of Teod, who Raoden is to marry, and the Fjordell high priest, Hrathen. Initially, Elantris, the capital of Arelon was filled with benevolent beings with magical healing abilities. Ten years ago, without warning, the magic failed. Elantrians became wizened, leper-like, powerless creatures, and Elantris itself dark, filthy, and crumbling.

Upon her arrival in Kae, Arelon’s new capital, Sarene finds instead that Raoden has died and she is considered his widow. Stricken by the same curse that ruined Elantris, Raoden was secretly exiled by his father to the dark city.
