Robin Hobb has written the Farseer Trilogy, a dense coming-of-age tale that begins with Assassin’s Apprentice follows with Royal Assassin, and finally Assassin’s Quest. Young Fitz is the bastard son of Prince Chivalry, the oldest the son of King Shrewd. At age 6 he is brought to the palace and spends his time with the stable master caring for horses and hounds. He has the ability to talk with dogs and later on with a wolf. A few years later he is moved into the palace and taught warrior skills, and lettering. Around the time Fitz turns 13, the king has him secretly tutored to become his assassin. He learns he has the ability to read people and situations in a royal court full of family politics and rivalries.
