Hadassah is taken captive in Jerusalem after watching her brother and sister and parents die when Rome sacks Jerusalem. She becomes the slave of a wealthy family from Ephesus that live in Rome. Marcus and Julia are their children, who are drawn into the sensuous and violent enticements of the day, much to the chagrin of their parents. Hadassah is given to Julia and soothes her master with songs and stories from the Old Testament, hiding her family’s conversion to Christianity.
