I’m always happy when I find a fantasy that’s stunningly crafted. Guy Gavriel Kay’s trilogy, The Fionavar Tapestry is one of these. The story begins in The Summer Tree. The mage, Loren Silvercloak, induces five university students to cross over from our world into the heart of the first world to meet the needs of Fionavar and all the worlds. It’s in this surprising land of men and dwarves, of mages and gods, that these five discover who they are truly meant to be. Only if they accept their destiny will the armies of the Light stand against the wrath of the Unravelle, who was defeated a thousand years before and bound.
The story continues in the second book, The Wandering Fire. I’m glad I have all three books.
“This is called ‘Rachel’s Song,'” he said, fighting a thickness in his throat, and began to play. It was a music no one there could know, but the pull of grief was immediate. Then after a long time he lifted his voice, deep when he sang, in words he’d decided long ago should never be sung. Then the music came alone again, transposed, worked on harder than anything he’d written in lis life. The part where the melody hurt, it was so beautiful, so laden with memory: the adapted second movement of the Brahms F Major Cello Sonata. The notes were clean, unburied, as Kevin played Rachel Kincaid’s graduation piece and gave sound to the sorrow that was his and not his.”
