I’ve read most of Scott Card’s science fiction books over time. I’ve liked this one best. Seventh Son is the first book in the Alvin the Maker series (six books). It’s a fantasy novel set in an alternate early American history where hard work and folk magic are real. Alvin is gifted with a power, or “knack” to make. His abilities make him a target of The Unmaker, who works through water, and tries to kill Alvin in his early years, before he can master his abilities.
“It’s an odd thing when life twists itself around to where the one person you thought you didn’t need winds up being the one you need the most. Guess that just goes to show things don’t happen by accident. You have a use for everyone you meet in your life, and God don’t put in any extras.”
