Author : Patricia Briggs
Patricia Briggs is one of my favorite fantasy authors. She has created such an amazing world and Mercy Thompson lands in the middle of the conflict in every book. Moon Called is the first book in her urban fantasy series about Mercy Thompson, who shape-shifts into a coyote. While she was raised by werewolves, she can never be one of them. So, she’s turned her talent for fixing cars into a business and now runs a one-woman mechanic shop in the Tri-Cities area of Washington State where witches, vampires, and fairies are also part of the landscape.
But Mercy’s two worlds are colliding. A half-starved teenage boy arrives at her shop looking for work, only to reveal that he’s a newly changed werewolf—on the run and desperately trying to control his animal instincts. Mercy asks her neighbor Adam Hauptman, the Alpha of the local werewolf pack, for assistance. Her act of kindness has unexpected consequences that leave her no choice but to seek help from those she once considered family—the werewolves who abandoned her.
Quote from her second in this series, Blood Bound: “As I approached, I pulled the necklace I always wore out from under my T-shirt so [the vampires] could get a good look at the stylized silver sheep as I approached. I don’t wear a cross. As a child, I’d had a bad experience with one. Besides, a crucifix was an instrument of Our Lord’s death—I don’t know why people think a torture device should be a symbol of Christ. Christ was a willing sacrifice, a lamb, not a cross for us to hang ourselves on; or at least that’s my interpretation. Maybe other people think of religion and God differently than I do. Anyway, my lamb works at least as well for me against vamp, as a cross is supposed to.”
