What we call the midlife transition is actually a spiritual and psychological process, not a chronological one. If is quite possible that the changes associated with midlife can occur at any point in the life span. First of all, there is the realization whether conscious or unconscious, that we have lived roughly half or life. We realize that if we are ever going to become who we are in the deepest recesses of our being, we have to let go of many things that have come to define who we are. And the ego has difficulty letting go of anything.
Kathleen Brehony specializes in periods of transitional development. Her book, Awakening at Midlife is a wake-up call for all who wish to make the most of this transitional journey—the entranceway into the deepest layers of one’s soul. It offers stories strategies, and exercises that can transform and enrich your own search for wholeness.
“We live in a world in which the vast majority of our energy is devoted to making things happen. We strive to achieve goals, to build and produce. We demand proof through experimental designs that can be replicated time and time again. This empirical approach to understanding the world is of great importance in our modern world. Yet some aspects of human experience do not lend themselves to being understood by logic and rational thought. Intuition, instinct, feelings, imagination, mystery, faith, love, religious experience, spiritual beliefs, art, and the stirrings of the soul—where do these fit into a model of knowledge that honors only what we can readily observe or measure?”
“What we know about ourselves is the tip of the iceberg. Understanding what les beneath the surface of our conscious self (our ego) requires looking deeply inside. The Self, as the regulating center of the psyche and the archetype of wholeness, is pushing forth within each of us. By allowing ourselves to hold on to the dynamic tension of opposing forces, a new consciousness can emerge and the midlife journey can begin to offer its greatest rewards.”
